Me and the Pelican

48"x48"

As my friend the photographer egged me on to move closer, the pelican slowly turned to face me. The series of photos culminates in this moment of connection. I chose techniques to capture the raw and genuine feel of the natural surroundings.

Materials and techniques: This is all cotton and heavily free motion quilted. The water is needle felted. The bird's feathers are strips of different colors of fabric attached with a glue stick. the bird's head is only two pieces of fabric: the yellow head and the white beak - everything else - the eye, the shading on the beak, etc. - is done with thread.

This piece is a finalist in the International Quilt Association's Festival Gallery of Quilt Art: Town and Country (2008). (What a mouthful!) It will be on display in Houston and then tour for three years.
